Californians: Sec'y of State: Call Schwarzenegger to Support Johnson as Replacement for Shelley
by conchis, Fri Feb 11, 2005 at 01:45:22 AM EST
Ross Johnson wrote the legislation for voter verified paper ballots signed into law last Fall.
Call Schwartzenegger's office now. This will probably happen FAST.
Phone: 916-445-2841
Calling the governor's office a first priority.
You can also email him using a web form, at http://www.govmail.ca.gov/.
Talking points within, including some reasons why McCormack, the alternative appointee, is undesirable.
Here is his contact info:
Governor's Office
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: 916-445-2841
Fax: 916-445-4633
In terms of message, I would suggest:
Supporting Johnson while actively opposing McCormack because of her tolerance of uncertified software and her efforts to rescind the paper trail bill that was passed without a single "no" vote in both houses of the State legislature (i.e., portray Johnson as a leader on this issue and McCormack as one who is out of touch with the electorate).
Calls should stress that:
- Recently retired State Senator Ross Johnson was co-chair of the Elections and Reapportionment Committee of the California State Senate and is thus well versed in election laws and procedures.
- He was the primary author of SB 1438, the bill mandating a voter-verified paper trail for all electronic voting machines in California. That bill was passed unanimously by both houses of the State legislature and signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger last Fall.
- Johnson is well respected on both sides of the aisle and would be a unifying force as Secretary of State.
- McCormack has consistently opposed voter-verifiable paper trails and has argued for the rescinding of SB 1438, a bill which the Governor has already signed into law.
- As such, she is out of touch with the legislature and the people of California, and would be a source of confrontation and divisiveness.
